November 2023. Provisional data

Main results

  • The number of passengers using public transport increased by 12.9% in November, as compared with the same month of 2022.
  • The annual rate for city transport increased by 16.2% and for inter-city transport by 11.8%.

More than 479.4 million passengers used public transport in November, 12.9% more than in the same month of 2022.

The annual rate for city transport increased by 16.2% and for inter-city transport 11.8%. Within the latter, it is worth noting the 16.9% rise in the bus transport.

City transport

City transport was used by more than 297.3 million passengers in November, 16.2% more than in the same month of 2022.

Metro transport increased by 12.5% in annual rate and City transport by bus increased by 19.0% in November.

Inter-city transport

More than 135.2 million passengers used inter-city transport in November, representing a 11.8% increase as compared with the same month of 2022.

By mode of transport, the bus transport increased by 16.9%, the rail transport by 6.4%, the air transport by 5.3%, and the maritime transport by 4.8%.

Special and unscheduled transport

More than 46.8 million passengers used special and unscheduled transport in November, indicating a decrease of 1.9% in annual rate.

The number of special transport passengers decreased by 6.8%, reaching more than 31.7 million users. Within this, school transport decreased by 6.8% and work transport did so by 6.8%.

Finally, unscheduled transport increased by 10.4% as compared with the same month of 2022, with more than 15.0 million passengers.

Results by Autonomous Communities

All the Autonomous Communities showed positive annual rates.

The highest increases were showed in Canarias (34.6%), Región de Murcia (30.0%) and Castilla y León (21.9%).

In turn,Galicia (12.5%), País Vasco (13.4%) and Castilla - La Mancha (15.3%) showed the lowest increases in bus transport.

Metro transport increased in all cities with this type of transport as compared with the same month of the previous year. Málaga's metro registered the highest increase (100.7%), and Madrid's registered the lowest (9.6%).

Methodological note

The purpose of the Passenger Transport Statistics (PT) is to provide monthly information regarding the number of passengers transported by city transport (bus and metropolitan), inter-city transport (road, rail, air and sea) and special and unscheduled bus transport.

Road transport in researched through a simple survey. For rail transport, the number of passengers is calculated using the information provided by the railway operators (RENFE and other autonomous companies). The information for air transport is provided by Civil Aviation, and for sea transport, the number of passengers disembarked is compiled using information from State Ports.

fill in a questionnaire by respondent using one of the following methods: internet (IRIA system), email, fax, telephone or post.
