Fourth Quarter 2024 and Year 2024

Main Results

  • The number of trips made by residents in Spain decreased by 7.9% in the fourth quarter to 38.4 million.
  • Total expenditure decreased by 3.1%, exceeding 12,151 million euros.
  • Andalusia, Catalonia and Comunidad de Madrid were the main destinations.
  • In 2024, the number of trips fell by 0.8%, while spending increased by 5.9%.

Residents in Spain made 38.4 million trips in the fourth quarter, 7.9% less than in the same period of 2023.

Trips whose main destination was the national territory decreased by 8.8% and those abroad by 0.5%.

Trips by purpose and accommodation

Leisure, recreation and holiday trips decreased by 9.9% in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, Visits to relatives or friends decreased by 6.9%.

Trips for Business and other professional reasons decreased by 14.2%, while trips for Other reasons rose by 13.9%.

By type of accommodation, domestic trips where residents stayed with relatives or friends decreased by 13.6%. In foreign trips, hotel accommodation decreased by 2.3%.

Main destinations and Autonomous Communities of origin

The main Autonomous Communities of destination for trips by residents in the fourth quarter were Andalusia (15.8% of the total), Catalonia (11.9%) and Comunidad de Madrid (9.9%).

In terms of origin, trips made by residents in the Comunidad de Madrid accounted for 17.0% of the total. This was followed by Cataluña (16.4%) and Andalucía (16.1%).

Removing the effect caused by the size of each Autonomous Community, those who travelled the most were residents of País Vasco (936 trips per 1,000 inhabitants), Comunidad Foral de Navarra (924) and Castilla y León (918).

Travel expenditure

The total travel expenditure in the fourth quarter reached 12,151.6 million euros, indicating an 3.1% decrease as compared with the same period of 2023. For domestic trips, total expenditure decreased by 5.7%, while for trips abroad it increased by 1.5%.

The average daily expenditure was 95 euros, with 76 euros spent on domestic trips and 153 euros for trips abroad.

By expenditure items, the highest expenditure on domestic trips was on bars and restaurants, with 26.3% of the total and an annual decrease of 4.7%. For trips abroad, the highest expenditure was on transport, with 32.8% of the total and an increase of 7.5%.

By main destination, the highest average daily expenditures were recorded for trips to the Comunidad de Madrid (110 euros), Illes Balears (104) and Canarias (93). In turn, the lowest figures were in Castilla-La Mancha (59 euros), Extremadura (60) and Región de Murcia (62).

By origin, the highest average daily expenses were made by residents of Illes Balears (112 euros), Cataluña (110), and Principado de Asturias (98). The lowest values are in Castilla-La Mancha (78 euros), La Rioja (83) and Extremadura (85).

Monthly data

December recorded the highest number of trips this quarter (14.3 million) and the longest average duration (3.4 overnight stays).

Excursions

The population aged 15 and over made 46.4 million trips in the fourth quarter, an annual decrease of 3.3%. Of these, 96.6% were for personal reasons.

Results for the whole of 2024

In 2024 as a whole, residents in Spain made 184.4 million trips, representing a decrease of 0.8% compared with the previous year. Domestic trips decreased by 2.3%, while trips abroad increased by 12.1%.

Overnight stays corresponding to those trips exceeded 811 million, with an increase of 1.1%. In turn, the total associated expenditure rose by 5.9%, to 62,233.1 million euros.

88.3% of trips had Spain as main destination and 11.7% abroad. Domestic trips accounted for 78.2% of overnight stays and 64.9% of the total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 64 euros.

In turn, trips abroad accounted for 21.8% of overnight stays and 35.1% of the total expenditure, with an average daily expenditure of 123 euros.

Methodological note

The objective of the Residents Travel Survey (ETR/FAMILITUR) is to provide information on the trips and excursions carried out by the population resident in Spain, both within the country and abroad, and their main characteristics (duration, expenditure, reason, accommodation, etc.).

In addition, it provides annual information on the percentage of the population travelling for personal reasons and investigates the reasons given by those who do not travel.

Type of operation:
quarterly continuous survey.
Population scope:
population aged 15 and over living in family homes in Spain.
Geographical scope:
the entire national territory.
Reference period of the results:
month, quarter, year (depending on the variable).
Sample size:
the effective monthly sample is around 8,200 persons, who provide information on the trips completed in the two months prior to the interview. The results of a reference month are obtained from around 16,400 questionnaires.
Sample type:
stratified three-stage random sample from the Georeferenced Address Framework. The first-stage units are census sections, the second-stage units are dwellings (a person aged 15 or over has been selected within each dwelling).
Collection method:
telephone and face-to-face interviews and online questionnaire.
