Description
This indicator estimates the number of premature deaths attributable to the prolonged exposure to PM2.5.
Calculation method

The number of premature deaths is calculated based on the methodology included in the WHO global air quality guide (2021) and in the EEA report Health impacts of air pollution in Europe (2022).

Observations

PM2.5 are particles whose diameter is less than 2.5 micrometres and can penetrate deep in the lungs where they may cause inflammation and exacerbate the conditions of people suffering cardiopulmonary disease.
