Waste recycling rate, excluding major mineral wastes

Type of indicator (global, European, national)

Description
Recycled waste is treated waste that has been sent to recovery operations other than energy recovery and landfilling (for simplicity, called recycling). Waste data is adjusted for waste collected in one country and recycled in another country.
Calculation method

$$\textit{Recycled waste rate}^{t}=\frac{\textit{Recycled waste (excl. major mineral waste)}^{t}}{\textit{Total treated waste (excl. major mineral waste)}^{t}} \cdot 100$$

Observations

The indicator covers both hazardous and non-hazardous waste from all economic sectors and households, including waste from waste treatment (secondary waste), but excluding most mining waste. These are excluded to prevent large volumes of waste generated in the mining and processing industry from influencing observations on waste generation trends. This also allows for a more meaningful comparison between countries, as there is a considerable amount of mining waste in countries with large mining and construction industries.
